When: October 2011
What: The client's IT outsourcing contract required them to maintain no less than one revision behind the latest desktop operating system revision.
The Challenge: All personal computing devices required an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. Therefore, to deliver this requirement with minimal impact, a strategy, design, and implementation plan including a clear and measurable outcome that improved end-user productivity was necessary.
The Solution: Developed a strategy and design for creating an ‘optimized desktop’ environment. Design included built-in efficiencies through improvements in infrastructure that supported the delivery of virtualization, software updates, and security patches, a centralized management system, and a complete inventory, review, and creation of an application portfolio.
The Result: The plan developed included a phased approach that would transform the way the client managed technologies to deliver computing services. This involved a more efficient delivery of the OS and supporting applications from an improved infrastructure that now supported end-user personal computing devices with the use of virtualization. The resultant design enhanced user features and productivity by providing a faster endpoint initial installation and ongoing update deployment time and improving on-demand application endpoint productivity services.
