A. Policy and Law
1. Demonstrate an understanding of state and federal laws, rules, and procedures governing special education finance, budgeting and accounting;
2. Demonstrate an understanting of state and federal regulations governing the monitoring of special education programs.
Reflection: This is an area I plan to continue to grow my skills, the same as my core competency Policy and Law, as most of my experiences have been through trainings, course work, and observations. I want to continue to grow my skills at processing and using policy and law effectively when making special education decisions. Early Childhood Special Education all the way through High School and Transition covers a huge amount of information, the more I use the information with actual situations the more relevance it will have. I have a good understanding of Special Education Due Process as I have been working in special education for many years. I have specialized in early Childhood Special Education but have been able to support and mentor Special Education Teachers with other specializations.
I have met this competency area through my course work, school law seminars, MDE webinars and special education director forums, mentoring special education staff, prior work expereince managing a school level ECSE budget with Rum River Special Education Coordinator oversight, and prior years experiences and knowledge.
My goals are to continue to develop knowledge and comfort with policy and law by attending yearly updates, collaborating with peers, verifying answers before responding to questions (to prevent giving staff wrong answers and losing trust), creating notes with frequent policy questions and answers, MASA updates and conferences, and consistently attending the MDE update forums. I have a good understanding but will gain additional experience and comfort when I am more involved in the process across grade levels.
