Policy and Law
Reflection: I plan to continue to grow my skills at processing and effectively using policy and law when making decisions. Early Childhood through High School and transition age covers a huge amount of information. The more opportunities I have to reflect on policy and law in actual real world situations, the more relevance it will have. I have a good understanding of Special Education Due Process law as I have been working in special education for many years. I have specialized in early Childhood Special Education but have been able to support and mentor Special Education Teachers with other specializations.
Some ways I have met my competencies are through; reviewing our and other’s school district Student Handbooks, attending school law trainings, course work on school law including processing law briefs, special education trainings and service provision, School Board and Special Education Cooperative Board Meetings
My goals are to continue to develop knowledge and comfort with policy and law by attending yearly updates, collaborating with peers, verifying answers before responding to questions (to prevent giving staff wrong answers and losing trust), creating notes with frequent policy questions and answers, and consistently attending the MDE update forums.
