Safety and Security
Reflection: I plan to keep safety a priority in everything I do, if student’s do not feel safe at school they are unable to learn. This is a big topic in politics and the media and doesn’t have a widely accepted solution. Schools must focus on prevention and have a crisis response plan and procedures. I have addressed this competency area by promoting and providing resources for staff for prevention through our Restorative Practices group, PBIS Team, and Comprehensive Support and Improvement Team. We have worked on adult awareness of social emotional supports by prioritizing needs for Dr. Grace to focus trainings, and attending trainings.
This is a big topic in politics and the media and doesn’t have a widely accepted solution. Schools must focus on prevention and have a crisis response plan and procedures. Some of the challenges with maintaining a safe and secure learning environment are that you can never plan for every possible event or contingency, community resources in a small community are often located a far distance away, communities know each other and do not always recognize when there is a serious mental health or behavior concern, and small communities sometimes feel that they are away from the troubles of bigger areas and don’t practice the crisis plans as often as necessary for staff to be able to react quickly in an actual crisis. There are benefits to being in a small town also, community members often pull together quickly to provide support to those who need it and there are familiar faces available for students and staff that may need extra support.
