Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a gynaecological condition characterized by crampy pelvic pain beginning shortly before or at the onset of menses and lasting for 1-3 days. The increasing incidence in primary dysmenorrhea has been attributed to stress and lifestyle. Emotional insecurity, psychological distress, depressive or/and anxiety symptoms are common with variable severity among patients with primary dysmenorrhea. Yoga has been found to be beneficial in reducing psychological distress and anxiety symptoms. This was never assessed among women with primary dysmenorrhea. Hence the present studyis to evaluate the effect of cyclic meditation on psychological distress among women with primary dysmenorrhea. Aim: To evaluate the effect of cyclic meditation on psychological distress among women with primary dysmenorrhea. Methods: Subjects aged 18-25 years undergoing pre-university course and undergraduate course were recruited from a residential college, Ujire, Karnataka, India. A total of 70 female subjects were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group (35 subjects) was given a cyclic meditation in the morning for 3 months, 5days in a week. Control group on the other hand was receiving supine rest. Practices were not given during their menstrual cycles. Assessments were made to both the groups before (baseline) and after 3 months of intervention. The assessments included were PGWBI, SF-36, and visual analogue scale. Results: The present study showed significant improvement in Psychological distress, HRQoL and VAS for pain among primary dysmenorrhea women. Results were compared within interventional and controlgroup, and results showed a significant difference in the scores of PSS and STAI (p<0.001). The overall scores for PSQI showed significant differences between the two groups (p<0.001). ESS however showed no significant differences between the two groups. Interpretation & Conclusion: The results of the study reported that cyclic meditation reduces the sympathetic activity, and balances neuroendocrine axis, also improves psychological well-being and reduces pain. Hence cyclic meditation can be effectively for the treatment of dysmenorrhea
