Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata)were collected from twelve production sites of Kullu valley of Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, Indiaand were analyzed forcopper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) and their associated human health risks using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results showed that the averageconcentration of Cu was found highest in cauliflower (41.8mg/kg dw), followed by Zn, Cd and Pb incabbage (44.9mg/kg dw, 1.65 mg/kg dw and 1.79 mg/kg dw, respectively). The average concentration of Cu in cauliflower, cabbage and radish and Cd in cabbage had exceeded the permissible limits of Indianstandards. When the present data was compared with international standards, the concentration of Cd and Pb in all the vegetables exceeded the EU standards, whereas only Cd exceeded FAO/WHO standard only. Transfer factor of heavy metals was found less than a unit for all the tested vegetables. Mountain people are exposed to Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb via tested vegetables @ 0.062g/year, 0.073g/year, 0.0019g/year and 0.0029g/year, respectively. From the present study, it is clear that currentmountain agricultural practices had significantly elevated the levels of heavy metals indifferent components of mountain ecosystem of north western Indian Himalaya. Therefore, local people, line departments and regulatory bodies should jointly develop an eco-friendly approach to reduce the levels of heavy metal in mountain ecosystem especially Cu and Cd as their HRI values exceeded a unit.
