A Review of The Parasitic Zoonoses of Man

Abstract

Parasitism is basically an association between two species, the host and the parasite whereby the parasite derives its nourishment from the host specie thereby causing the host pathological harm. Parasitic diseases causes serious harm in developing world. Presently it is reported that there are over 15 protozoan parasites and other 50 parasitic zoonotic diseases. Zoonoses are those diseases that are transmitted naturally from other vertebrate animals to man. Zoonotic parasites causes both human and animal health concerns as well as economic and food safety problems. The emergence and re-emergence of parasitic zoonoses has been recorded worldwide. This review focuses on the zoonoses of parasites which include protozoan zoonoses, cestodezoonoses, trematodezoonoses and nematode zoonoses. The aetiological agents, brief epidemiology, mode of transmission and life cycle among other parameters is discussed.

Abstract

Introduction:

Toxoplasmosis and Rubella infection are among the most serious of those contracted during pregnancy in terms of foetal consequences. Although Toxoplasmosis and Rubella antibody screening is unusual in rural Africa settings, it may be cost effective doing for those at higher risk.

Objective:

To evaluate the seroprevalance and risk factors for Toxoplasmosis and Rubella infection among pregnant women in ISTH, Irrua. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross sectional study involving 370 consecutive parturients attending antenatal clinic in ISTH, Irrua. Their sera were tested for Rubella and Toxoplasmosis specific IgM antibodies using Five Link TORCH rapid test kits.

Results:

The seroprevalence of Toxoplasmosis IgM was 2.2% while Rubella was 3.2%. This was highest among grandmultipara. Toxoplasmosis IgM was highest among women during the first trimester while Rubella occurred more in the third trimester. There was a significant relationship between contact with ‘cats’ and Toxoplasmosis antibody titre (P< 0.001), and for Rubella infection a positive history of occurrence of body rash during pregnancy (P< 0.001). Toxoplasmosis IgM titre was raised more among pregnant women with HIV and HCV co- infected (P< 0.001 and P < 0.001) respectively.

Conclusion:

The low prevalence of these diseases in this study and the challenges in diagnosis and therapy limit the effectiveness of a screening strategy. Therefore selective screening for women at risk is recommended.

Photon Young Scientist Program (PYSP):

PYSP encourages Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Research students/ fellow with a passion of Research and Development in their chosen area of interest in Science or Technology to excel in research. Students are encouraged to write and submit a Short Communication or a Review Article along with their ‘own’ and ‘original’ research idea. Their submissions would be screened on the basis of merit and novelty in Global Perspective. Screened submissions would be sent for peer review. Accepted articles would be published in Photon Journals under young scientist category. Editor-in-Chief may recommend selected articles to appropriate Photon Journals subject to their Aims and Scope. PYSP identifies world’s best innovative minds that have calibre to excel in their chosen area of research. Such innovative minds would be awarded with Young Scientist under PYSP.

Eligibility: Aspiring students must be registered for Undergraduate or Post Graduate/ Ph.D course in Management, Science or Technology stream under a recognized university.

Age: Should be Above 18 Years.

Nationality: Any Country. It is a Global Project.(Represent your country Through an open competition)

Language of submission: English

How to apply: 1. Write a Short Communication or a Review Article in word file using Times new Roman 12 font, mention your ‘Original Research Idea’ separately, in a single word file and explain how you would achieve your goals, step by step. How your research idea can transform/ catalyze the domain. 2. Submit us two Names of referees with their E-mail addresses and affiliations, who could comment on your capability, please mention in what capacity they know you.
