Abstract

The advent and spread of the Baptist Mission in Mbumland by indigenous Cameroonians since 1927 has been considered by the Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) as a laudable success in the domain of evangelization.1However Christianity superimposed another layer of worship on the Mbum and failure of the church to neatly erase and efface the doubts and predicaments of the indigenous population, diminished the relevance of the faith. The social and economic benefits garbed in the impinging religion became the major interest of many adherents and thus the underlying philosophy of Christianity. Spreading the good news, was defeated and its practical impact was consequently only a skin deep. In other words, syncretism became commonplace and despite the ‘wibumisation’ of Christianity, the call for cultural revival was on the sway meanwhile the appeal to purge the church of “tradition” never went beyond the pulpits. The veritable question therefore is how did the Baptist mission chart the course of coexistence with indigenous practices in Mbumland? Using primary and secondary sources, this study argues that indigenization and contextualization, paradigms used by the Baptist Mission to ensure biblical purity and coexistence with indigenous practices failed to produce desired results because of the inherent superiority slant. Instead of complete annihilation of indigenous culture, the Mbum experience with the Baptist mission provided a case of culture sharing reflected in the conduct of local church activities in the area. Failure of the church to adequately address threats from witches and wizards and check the spread of epidemics with their adverse effects on the people explains why wholehearted devotion to Christianity was lacking.
