Application of Degradation Techniques in Purifying Spring Water from Santa (NorthWest, Cameroon) Polluted by Six Insecticides Using Limestone as Degradating Agent

Many methods of degradation have been developed to reduce detrimental impacts of pesticides in water biota, but few in homes treatment of drinking water. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of limestone on endosulfans (beta-; alpha-), dichlorvos, methylparathion, malathion and profenofos applicable at household scaletreatment of drinking water. Spring water was collected from Santa agricultural area and spiked with the above insecticides. Limestone was bought from the local market and a solution of 10% was prepared in milli-Q water. Degradation effect was evaluated according to the reduction of the quantity of insecticides spiked on the samples and degradates (malaxon, metabolized endosulfans (lactone, sulphate, alcohol and ether) generated after 5 to 60 minutes contact. Characterization was done using gas chromatography equipped with ECD or NPD detector and GC-MS for confirmation. Results: the maximum reduction rate varies: alfa-endosulfan (94%), beta-endosulfan (93%), dichlorvos (100%), methyl-parathion(56%), malathion (82%) and profenofos (93%); generated metabolites were: malaxon, endosulfan alcohol, lactone and ether; shaking and temperature accelerate their degradation process; Endosulfans are more sensitive to limestone than organophosphates; the duration of contact times affects the action of limestone. This household productcan be used forchemical purification of drinking water at the household scale with no risk since toxic endosulfan metabolite (endosulfansulphate) was not found.
