Abstract

Globally, infertility is estimated to be 8-12 percent of couples within the childbearing years, while in Kenya it is at 11.9 per cent. In ethnobotanical studies in Kenya and India, Grewia tenax, a shrub (Fam. Teliaceae), has been reported to be used as a pro-fertility herb. The objective of the current study was to determine the effects of Grewia tenax root methanol extract on fertility. The plants’ effect on estrus cycle and reproductive hormones in female wistar albino rats was evaluated. The extract significantly regularized disrupted estrus cycle compared to the negative control. The plant extract also caused increased reproductive hormone levels compared to the negative control. The plant extract has fertility enhancing potential. The plant species requires further research to establish its mechanism of action and its effect on reproductive hormone receptors to aid towards development of novel infertility treatment drug.

Abstract

The study investigated the effects of methanolic leaf extract of Pterocarpus mildbraedii on the haematological parameters of rats with a view to ascertaining the efficacy of the plant in the management of anaemia. The experimental animals were randomly divided into four groups of five animals each. Group I serve as control, groups II and III received extract of P. mildbraedii at 125 and 250 mg/kgbwt respectively and group IV received Astyfer at 8 mg/kgbwt once daily for 14 days. The results showed a significant (ρ< 0.05) increase in the haemoglobin and packed cell volume at 250 mg/kgbwt of the extract when compared with the control. These increases coupled with the unchanged status of the red cell indices by the oral administration of methanolic leaf extract of P. mildbraedii might be attributed to its beneficial rich content of bioactive agents such iron, amino acids and vitamins.

Abstract

The genus Swertia belongs to family Gentianaceae and comprises about 170 known species that are mainly native to temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. About 40 species of Swertia are found in India, mainly at high altitude (1200-3000 m) in the temperate Himalayan region, Western Ghats and some parts of Central India particularly Amarkantak region. Swertia angustifolia possess several bioactive compounds. These compounds plays vital role in biological activities such as hepatoprotective, antihepatotoxic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, antileprosy, hypoglycemic, antimalarial, antioxidant and anticholinergic. Swertiamarin is an important bioactive compound found in Swertia angustifolia which is mainly used in bronchial asthma, malarial fever, blood purifier and febrifuge. High performance liquid chromatography is now used for quantitative determination of bioactive compound which helps for the identification of quality germplasm. Due to over exploitation and as per ICUN it comes under endangered category. The seed germination percent under control condition is reported to be <32 while the treated seeds with GA3 have been reported 96%. Other propagation methods of this species have not been reported so far. Therefore, it is an urgent need to develop a suitable propagation technology for the conservation and multiplication of this species. In this paper quantitative determination of bioactive compound Swertiamarin has been evaluated through High Performance Liquid Chromatography for the identification of quality germplasm of this species. The identified quality planting material was subjected to their in vitro multiplication for the production of their clones. The germplasm of this species were collected from Central and western parts of India from their wild habitat. The whole plant was subjected for quantitative estimation of Swertiamarin. It was found that the germplasm which were collected from Central India conation optimum 4.51% Swertiamarin. The identified germplams were multiplied through in vitro propagation from nodal segments. Optimum morphogenetic response in terms of shoot multiplication was achieved when the MS culture medium was supplemented with BAP 3.0mg/t +IAA 1.0mg/lt. On an average 32 green and healthy shoots were induced within 20 to 25 days from single explants. The in vitro raised shoots were successfully rooted under in vitro condition when the culture medium was supplemented with IBA 3.0mg/lt. The in vitro regenerated plantlets were hardened with 80 percent survival within 20 to 25 days.

Abstract

Medicinal plants and phytopreparations (herbal medicinal products) obtained from them are successfully used for the treatment of human diseases. The therapeutic effect of the presence in them of a variety of natural compounds and biologically important trace elements, especially in higher concentration concentrates in higher doses. The elemental content in the tissues (leaf, flower and fruit) of medicinal plants Chamerion angustifolium (L.) Holub (Onagraceae) was determined by using multielement epithermal instrumental neutron activation analysis. For the first time a total of 18 essential and trace elements were observed in the plant species collected in Russia. Possible links between pharmacological action of this plant and content of some elements of vital importance for human metabolism and prevention and healing of different diseases are discussed.
