Week 0

Time to vote on shows for our Fall season and build a schedule. Our schedule this Friday will be driven by voting and any re-sampling needed for that, but as time permits we might watch some of our continuing shows from Summer, as well as sample new Fall shows. Saturday doesn't have any continuing shows, but we can watch the feature we didn't get to last week, sample some new shows, and actually do the whole schedule-building thing - I think we'll find a way to fill the time.

Notes: We started with schedule-building, then went into a discussion of how we want to handle our voting nominations, particularly for features and for older shows. Specifically, our thoughts were:


For older shows: we’ll pick a specific slice of time to look at (say, 10 years ago; or perhaps multiples of 10 years ago) and pick some of the better shows from those seasons to sample, then vote on them.


For features: we’ll plan to reserve some time during the season - perhaps 1 slot in each half of the season, whether on 1 night or both nights - and then “sample” features by looking up trailers and using that to inform our voting.


After that, we decided we’d watch the Spy x Family movie after the break, and before then we sampled

Week 9

We're coming down toward the end of the season (at least for the scheduled showings), and we're just about out of samplers. Next Friday we have the first Rascal Does Not Dream movie, and on Saturday we can have a few more samplers of old shows or watch a short feature.


Speaking of features: I know it's weird to link to this sort of announcement on Youtube, especially when it's just a text/image post, but that's the best source I have. Look Back by Tatsuki Fujimoto (creator of Chainsaw Man) will have a this-weekend-only theatrical re-run in a few theaters around the nation, including the Laemmle Glendale and some Claremont Laemmle locations. Participating theaters will be giving away shikishi with art by the creator Fujimoto and by the film's director Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Flip Flappers) while supplies last.

Week 10

Lots of animated films in theaters this week, including Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim in wide release and limited early theatrical releases of The Colors Within by Naoko Yamada (who directed all of K-On!, Tamako Market, and The Heike Story), and The Day the Earth Blew Up: a Looney Tunes Movie.


This was going to be our last week of regular scheduled showings. Now it'll be our last full week or regular scheduled showings - folks who are travelling are doing so next Saturday and Sunday, so we can actually have showings next Friday. This lets us get a bit further into Moribito and Sengoku Youko before taking a break for the holidays, and also lets us watch a feature this week with a broader audience than Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl - we'll save that until next week (also, it gives Alan more time to go from "just received the Blu-ray" to "ready to stream the movie").

Week 11

A couple of our regulars are traveling this weekend and will be out of town next weekend. We're still able to make a bit of progress in our ongoing shows 1st half of Friday this week, but Saturday and next weekend will all be focused on features or other semi-random shows.


There's a Bloomberg article about how Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll isn't going so well - interesting reading. This has led to some enlightening follow-up discussions about corporate mismanagement of anime companies from Lance Heiskell(formerly head of Marketing at Funimation) and translator Zack Davisson (regarding Anime Strike).
