The Reading Log
Dear parents and students,
Copious reading of high-quality literature is a significant contributor to enhanced writing skill in the student and is therefore mandated; students will be required to read a certain amount of quality literature each month and to keep a reading log.
Here is what that means, practically:
* 30 minutes per day reading - student checks it off; parent signs to verify
* book is "quality children's literature" at or slightly above student's ability or grade level (not below it or significantly above it)
* book is approved by instructor beforehand, and meets with parents' approval as well
* reading should be enjoyable fiction not being read for any other course (including readers for Sonlight history!)
If you need ideas, you can find suggestions for titles of quality children's literature in the following sources: Honey for a Child's Heart (by Hunt), Honey for a Teen's Heart (by Hunt and Hampton), or The Read-Aloud Handbook (by Jim Trelease).
