We all know what’s coming in about a week or so, the Super Bowl. Typically most people watch for the game or even the halftime show, but some, myself included, watch simply for the commercials. Commercials during the Super Bowl have now become as big an event as the game itself. People will talk for hours at the water cooler the next day about their favorite commercials, and this is just what the advertisers are counting on. Many advertisers spend a significant portion of their yearly advertising budget on only one Super Bowl commercial! For many however it’s money well spent.
Part of the reason commercials are so successful during the Super Bowl goes beyond the mere fact that the game is usually the most highly watched event of the television season. With the advent of new technology over the past few years, especially websites like You Tube, fans of Super Bowl commercials can watch their favorite scenes over and over. Last year, a commercial by Volkswagen involving a young boy dressed like Darth Vader who thought he was controlling his Dad’s car went viral. This is what advertisers dream about when they spend those big advertising dollars for the game. Not only do they get viewers during the game, but for weeks after.
