Elementary Language Arts—Foundations in Literature and Writing (2011-2012)
Class Description:
This course is designed to introduce the concept of literary analysis and writing to the strong elementary language arts student. Coursework will involve the study and discussion of quality children’s literature, including novels, short stories, and poetry. Students will also engage in creative writing (stories, poems) and will learn to keep a “writer’s notebook.” They will learn organization and responsibility as they manage their materials, keep track of their work, and learn to complete assignments in a neat and timely fashion. Students will be required to read a certain amount of quality children’s literature each day and to keep a monthly reading log. Access to a computer with Internet and word processing capabilities is required. This course is offered on alternate years with Elementary Language Arts—Foundations in Grammar and Writing; students will benefit from having taken that course before this one, but it is not required. This course is suggested for grades 4-6, although older students who would benefit from a group class on literature are welcome.
