My interest in media started as a kid, where I spend most of my time watching TV or playing computer games on the PC. My parents were quite early adapters of these machines, and by the end of the nineties I began exploring the internet too. During my teenage years I lost interest in TV and computer games, as my focus shifted to exploring different music subcultures and their lifestyles. I got into DJ-ing, VJ-ing, producing music and organizing electro and breakcore/tekno parties in my home town.
Here is an example of my old VJ/music production stuff:
Sometimes later I decided to do a proper study, and began to study ArtScience at the Royal Acadamy of Art in The Hague. Here I mainly devoted myself to developing live cinema performance, a new and upcoming form of audiovisual art. Live cinema still is quite an undefined genre within the visual and performing arts, but generally it is based on real-time computer generated visuals and audio, manipulated live by the artist to create a unique cinema experience every time a piece is performed.
While studying at the Royal Acadamy of Art I also finished a minor in natural science at Leiden University, and followed several courses from the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. After finishing my BFA in 2011, I decided to continue my study at university level, and enrolled into the Media Technology MSc programme in the second half of 2011, to expand my research to a scientific level.
It is rather difficult to describe all of my interests related to science, media and technology, which range from the history of Dutch hardcore/gabber music, to the development of science and technology and their impact on society. Currently one of my main area's of focus on a scientific level are electromagnetic fields and how these may affect living organisms, but also larger systems such as the earth, the sun and stars and the planets.
I tend to incorporate my findings and ideas into my artworks, of which PassiFlora is my latest example.
Here is a snippet of my current live cinema piece PassiFlora:
In my spare time I furthermore like to write poetry and texts about strange observations in my daily live, and think out peculiar theories about the structure of the universe.
