THE ASSIGNMENT
The goal of the final assignment is simply to create a mediatech project that you will be proud of and that is memorable.
Good projects tend to have a strong concept, focus on a key central idea or question, and in a natural fashion evoke an experience with an observer. Less good projects are all over the place or attempt more than they achieve. Good projects have a story to it without becoming obvious, artificial or pretentious.
In terms of the 'how' good projects achieve this with minimal technical means, or quite on the opposite tackle a difficult technical problem, or completely repurpose a technology for different ends. Complexity is not necessarily a plus. Good projects start off with some clear idea, but may change course while being built, without getting lost.
Don't know where to start? If you don't have an idea, don't start with the project ('the solution') but find a topic or question that interests you first - browse what we have discussed and the various new media project repositories for instance for inspiration (but think about creating something different). When you have defined some kind of topic or question of interest, coming up with a specific topic will be easier.
I would like to encourage you to bring output from earlier assignments as well. This fits nicely with the open lab theme (see homepage), it can feel a bit like a workplace that has a mix of finished projects as well as prototypes.
You can work in groups of up to 3 people
EXPO LOGISTICS
.
Timings have been confirmed:
Room open: around 9 AM Friday the building will be open for build up (and securing your spot ;-))
If you need to do additonal preparation, the room will be open from 9-11 AM on Thursday; after that there will be another event in the building and they dont want build activities to happen. You can ping info@scheltemaleiden.nl if you have specific questions.
A lot folks will be there just after 9, Peter will be there around 9-930 as well.
Internal presentations: 1300
Open to public: 1500-2030
Note there will be another event at 9 so we all need to have left before that and there may be folks in the foyer during break down. In principle we can leave things in the Expo room, and then break down fully on Saturday morning if there is a need for this (large installations etc).
The room is completely empty - there are no power cables, extension cords, chairs, tables - so you need to arrange your own. See the homepage of this course for an impression.
List of items needed / available / questions
Projectors
Needed: Aurismas? Dimitris?Joanna?
Available: ? Check with abdel (abdel@liacs.nl)
Q: are we allowed to mount the projector to the ceiling? and more in general can be attach things to the ceiling (what type is it, height) << any word on these?
A: Min height is 3m and the ceiling has beams etc (see http://scheltemacomplex.nl/images/verhuur/DSC_0898_xl.JPG) that you can potentially use. It is a monumental building so we are not allowed to do any permanent damage (screws etc) but you can use glue holdfasts, G hooks etc. to mount things to the ceiling.
Tables?
Does anyone have table tops? Peter can bring some 'schragen'. Table tops no longer seem to be there, you need to arrange your own table (we dont have a car arranged).
Make sure you bring your own power extension cords etc
Transport
We have no transport at this point from LIACS to Scheltema
Other special requests?
Speakers
Navid needs the 2 mediatech speakers / powered monitors
Arnold Jan would like to borrow these just during set up, during the actual expo he will be using head phones
Pass to get into LIACS at night or saturday
None of the students seems to have this so you will have to take MT stuff home for the weekend.
Wireless web access
There is wireless available that we can have access to, but from the ground floor and we are on first. So if your installation depends on it, bring a mobile access point (iPhone cluster ;-)).
Bar will be open until 6pm (then close because of a party)
