New and Continuing Students

Once accepted to NKU you should receive an email notice from the Office of Graduate Education that you have been admitted. The admission might be full or provisional. If admission is provisional, there is something missing from your application that must be supplied before the end of your first semester. This is usually a matter of supplying final official transcripts, but it could require something else, like a letter of reference or a complete and updated resume.

You will receive your NKU email address, which you will use to access the student portal to mynku.nku.edu. There you will be able to see the schedule of classes, register for classes, and evaluate your progress toward your degree (degree audit). Please use your NKU email address for all official NKU correspondence.

Your catalog of record is the graduate catalog of the year you were admitted. Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulation related to graduate education, especially those related to Progression to Degree, Degree and Certificate Exit Program Requirements, and Academic Support and Policies. Also review The Graduate Student Honor Code and Appeals Policy.

New students are encouraged to visit http://gradorientation.nku.edu before beginning classes to become familiar with campus resources available to graduate students.

Welcome to MAIS

You should also hear from the MAIS program director with some advice for getting started. Reach out if you have any questions. You can schedule a meeting at rudygarns.youcanbook.me.

Submit Your Mission Statement and Plan of Study

You will be given access to our MAIS Microsoft Teams Notebook. There you should fill out a plan of study, which includes a brief description of your intended program (your mission statement) and a list of courses you think would serve that program. It's a game plan, not a contract. You can use this form to update your plan later.

Review the MAIS Handbook

Review the IST Student Handbook. There is a section dedicated to the MAIS program.

Transfer Courses

If you are considering transferring some courses, fill out the transfer request and supply syllabi for the courses you want to transfer. More information in the Catalog. Must be approved by the program director and the Graduate Education office. Check with the program director before you start.

Register for Classes

Check the schedule of classes on MYNKU for the semester you want to start. Consider classes only at the 500-level or above. You must take IST 585 in the fall closest to your start time. You can register for classes on MYNKU. If you are not allowed to register for a class, it might be because you don't have the prerequisites, which might be because you need certain prerequisite classes, or because you are not student in the other program. If the latter, you can write to the instructor or the other program director and ask to be permitted in the course. Explain that you are a MAIS student and that the course would fit in your plan of study. Usually there is no problem, but if problems persist, contact the MAIS program director. MAIS students cannot take classes in Chase Law School, but most other graduate programs are open to other students.

The Greater Cincinnati Consortium

If you are planning to take a class through the Greater Cincinnati Consortium, you can look at the schedule of classes at the relevant university. You will register for the course through the NKU registrar. The request must be approved and signed by the MAIS program director. If you have questions, you can check with the NKU Registrar or the MAIS program director. Remember you can take up to 9 hours of course work through the Consortium, and you take these courses as an NKU student at NKU prices.
