Student Learning Objectives

The Interdisciplinary Studies program pursues four student learning objectives (SLOs) across all degree programs and in all its classes.  Information literacy is a foundational skill that empowers individuals in interdisciplinary studies to gather, evaluate, and utilize information effectively from various sources, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication – all of which are vital for success in this multidisciplinary approach to education and research. For a detailed look at our Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) see the document below.

Successful Student Profiles

Below we describe the competencies of the successful student in each degree program.

AAIS

The successful AAIS graduates are capable of multidisciplinary thinking but perhaps not yet accomplished at interdisciplinary work. Graduates are able to see connections across different college disciplinary courses within an Arts and Sciences meta-major and how different disciplines can contribute to a single problem. Graduates are ready to move into self-conscious interdisciplinary study.

BAIS

The successful BAIS graduates are capable of interdisciplinary thinking and integrative learning but perhaps not yet accomplished at transdisciplinary work. They are able to see connections across different college disciplinary courses and to integrate ideas and insights into a single project. Graduates can explain the nature and value of interdisciplinary study to a potential employer. They are ready to move into transdisciplinary study.

MAIS

The successful MAIS graduates are capable of transdisciplinary thinking and working with experts on a professional level both in and outside of the academy. They are familiar with the state of the art in a selected field or problem space and can contribute new ideas or propose novel solutions.
