Honors Scholars

The kind of interdisciplinary work that interests Integrative Studies majors is also of interest to Honors Scholars at NKU. Both programs require an introductory course that focuses on what is required for integrative thinking and research, and both require a capstone experience that asks students to apply what they've learned in a research project. Integrative Studies also requires a final ePortfolio.

Capstone

We offer an opportunity to consolidate these requirements. If you are an Honors scholar interested in BAIS or a BAIS student who qualifies for Honors, please consider the following.

    • The Honors Introduction HNR 102 can be substituted for IST 185 as a BAIS requirement.

    • The Honors Capstone (HNR 492 (3 hours) and HNR 497 (3 hours)) can be substituted for the BAIS Capstone courses (IST 397 and IST 497 respectively). Honors scholars should also enroll in HNR 490 for 0 hours when they take HNR 497.

Honors scholars can also take the IST capstone sequence (IST 397 and IST 497), which are offered sequentially in two seven week sessions. Contact the Honors program before you start and take HNR 490 for 0 hours during the capstone semester.

Honors students who opt for the capstone substitution will be required to

    • notify the Integrative Studies program and the Honors College of their intention to make a substitution.

    • work with the Honors program to identify a Capstone mentor who will guide the student through the project.

    • meet all the requirements and expectations for the Honors capstone experience.

    • take HNR 490 for 0 hours in the final capstone semester.

All substitutions/waivers for the BAIS requirements must be approved by the IST director in advance. If you are interested in combining Honors and Integrative Studies, please contact the BAIS program director or the program advisor.

ePortfolio

Graduation candidates must submit to the BAIS director, during the final semester, an ePortfolio for the BAIS major that includes

  • the final Honors Capstone project;

  • a prospectus or proposal used for the Honors project;

  • a bibliography; and

  • a brief reflective essay on the interdisciplinary nature of the overall project and value of your work to your intellectual growth and the larger community.

Consult our ePortfolio guide with more information for creating and designing the Integrative Studies ePortfolios when you start.
