Requirements

The requirements for the major in BAIS depend on the student's catalog of record--the catalog in place when he or she first entered the university as a degree seeking student.

Students who are working under a 2018 University Catalog or later

Students seeking the Bachelor of Arts degree in Integrative Studies (BAIS) must complete minors or Areas of Focus in three disciplinary or interdisciplinary programs. The requirements for a minor in any program are listed in the relevant department’s pages in the catalog. A focus is defined as 12 credit hours at the 300 level or above in any recognized disciplinary or interdisciplinary program (major or minor). You will work with an advisor to design your own program of study. The three areas of study must include at least one area from the College of Arts and Sciences.

  • This program does not require a secondary major/minor/focus beyond the three used to complete the degree requirements.

  • No course can count in more than one focus or minor.

  • No grade of lower than C- will be accepted for any course in a focus or minor.

  • A minimum of 2.0 GPA (C average) in each of the programs declared for the major.

BAIS students must take Introduction to Integrative Studies (IST 185) , Interdisciplinary Inquiry (IST 397), and the capstone course (IST 497).

Students must also complete all NKU graduation requirements including:

  • General education requirements, which should be completed in the first 60 hours of college-level work

  • 45 hours of upper-division coursework

  • A minimum of 120 credit hours

  • Last 30 hours completed at NKU (residency requirement)

Students who are working under a catalog prior to 2018

Students who are working under catalogs prior to 2018: IST 397 Interdisciplinary Inquiry is not required.

Students who are working under a University Catalog prior to 2016: IST 185 is not required but students seeking the Bachelor of Arts degree in Integrative Studies must complete minors or focus areas in four disciplinary or interdisciplinary programs. Technically, three of these areas contribute to your BAIS degree and the fourth is your required minor or secondary program of study. The four areas of a study must include:

  • At least two areas from the College of Arts and Sciences;

  • A minimum 2.0 GPA and a "C" or better (C- or below not accepted) in each course for major

For all BAIS students we require IST 497, the capstone course, which involves both a portfolio of artifacts (work samples from each of the four disciplines studied) and an integrative final project.

Students must also complete all NKU graduation requirements including:

  • General education requirements, which should be completed in the first 60 hours of college-level work

  • 45 hours of upper-division coursework

  • A minimum of 120 credit hours

  • Last 30 hours completed at NKU (residency requirement)
