In order to keep abreast of the central concepts and tools of my subject area, I have joined the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). I receive their journal Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School which provides monthly problems, articles relating to different mathematical topics and cross curricular ideas, Teaching Children Mathematics which focuses on informal reasoning to help students develop a strong conceptual basis that leads to greater mathematical abstraction, and most recently, to Mathematics Teacher Educator which provides a means for practitioner knowledge related to the preparation and support of teachers of mathematics. My membership card provides me with access to their website for other useful information, including Illuminations which provides online activities linked to the NCTM GLE’s. I was a member from 2006 - 2013
I was a member of New Hampshire's Teachers of Mathematics (NHTM) from 2009 - 2013
I was a member the National Education Association to not only have a say in how our union was represented at our school, but also to have a source of information about current legislation, policies and educational influences. My membership card provides me with access to their website and benefits. I served as President for the 2008-2009 school year. I served as Vice President for the 2009-2010 school year.
I joined the e-Mentoring of Mathematics and Sciences in 2010 to have another resource for both teaching questions about classroom management and curriculum. This online resource allowed me the opportunity to discuss my problems of being a first year teacher with a teacher with several years of experience.
Since 2014, I have been an active member of NTEN - Nonprofit Technology Network. This organization proves training, community forums, and colleagues to collaborate with who are also in the nonprofit sector.
