Derived Stems – Temas Derivados
Arabic has ten derived stems which build upon the basic meaning of a verb in a sometimes predictable way. The table below gives the theoretical ten shapes illustrated by the root k-s-r (to break).
I have – eu tenho – cindî, lî
you have – você tem – cindak{m}, cindik{f}, lika, liki
he has – ele tem – cindhu, lihu
she has – ela tem – cindhâ, lihâ
we have – nós temos – cindnâ, linâ
you hav e – vocês têm – cindkum, likum
they have – eles, elas têm – cindhum, lihum
I don’t have – cindî laysa
I had – cindî kân/kân cindî
Notice that stems II, III and IV have “u” in the impefect personal prefixes instead of “a”.
Stem I usually is the basic meaning: kasar = to break (something)
Stem II usually has an emphatic or causative meaning: kassar = to make (someone) break (something)
Stem II usually make a stem I prepositional verb transitive
Stem IV is usually the causative of stem I, like stem II
Stem V is usually a reflexive or passive form of stem II
Stem VI is usually a reciprocal (each other) of stem III
Stem VII is always intrasive, forming the passive of stem I
Stem VIII has no clear meaning
Stem IX is very rare, always denoting aquiring a color or physical defect
Stem X may denote attributing a quality to its object or seeking a result
Today most educated speakers would use the jussive instead of the imperfect. Final short vowels are usually dropped in modern pronunciation, except -i in the feminine 2nd person perfect. There is technically a dual form also, rarely used today, which ends in -tumâ for the 2nd person and adds -â to the 3rd persons of the perfect, -bâni to the 2nd and 3rd persons of the imperfect and -bâ to the 2nd and 3rd persons of the subjunctive and the jussive. The feminine form of the second person plural is rarely used. Many speakers also drop the feminine of the 3rd person plural. The passive form is different only in its voweling.

Appendix I Purals – Apêndice I Plurais
Arabic possesses an intrincated system of plural shapes. Apart from complex words such as those consisting of more then four consonants, which take an external plural, most Arabic words form their plurals by changing their vowel patterns and sometimes gaining an affix. Amongst these words, the only ones entirely predictable are the four-letter words. Possessing a short vowel between C3 and C4, their plural shape is then CaCâCiC. Otherwise they go CaCâCîC. Note as well that the feminine ending is dropped in such plurals:
Obs: CvCCvvC nouns refering to people optionally have a CaCáCiCa plural shape: ustâdh > asâtidha (professor).
As for three-consonant words, there are no steadfast rules. One can only ascertain a word’s plural safely from a dictionary. I will try however to summarize the main tendencies governing such maverick plurals:
- CiCCa words tend to build plural CiCaC: qitcah > qitac (piece) - nuktah > nukat (joke).
- CuCCa words tend to build plural CuCaC: lucbah > lucab (toy) - sûrah (written s-w-r-ah) > suwar (image).
- CvCC words may to build plural CuCúC: qalb > qulûb (heart) - cilm > culûm (science) - jund > junûd (troops) or ;aCCáC: film > aflâm (film) - shakl > ashkâl (shape) - lawn > alwân (colour).
- CáCiC words may to build plural C1uC2C2áC3: sâkin > sukkân (dweller) – sâ’iH > suwwâH (tourist). Some of these words have the option of a CaCaCa plural if denoting people: Tâlib > Tullâb or Talaba (student).
- CáCiC (or CáCiCa) words tend to build plural CawáCiC: sáHil > sawáHil (coast) - qâcidah > qawâcid (rule).
- Words with the feminine ending and long vowel on C2 tend to build plural CaCá;iC: jarîdah > jarâ’id (newspaper) - jazîrah > jazâ’ir (island, in the definite plural aljazâ’ir it also means Algeria).
Arabic Sentences and Grammar
The verb to be – O verbo ser/estar
Em árabe não se usa verbo ser/estar no presente. Ou não se usa nada ou, no caso de sujeito da 3ª. pessoa, se pode usar os pronomes de 3ª. pessoa no lugar onde ficaria o verbo.
ana mudarris – eu sou professor
huwa mudarris – ele é professor
alrajul huwa mudarris – o homem é professor (lit. “o homem ele professor)
