“Vatilbash Esther malchus va’ta’amod bachatzar beis hamelech hapenimis”
And Esther donned royalty and stood in the inner court of the king’s palace
(5:1)
In describing Esther’s uninvited approach to Achashveirosh, the Pasuk tells us that “Va’ta’amod,” and she stood in the inner court of the king’s palace immediately opposite (facing) the (entrance to) the king’s house. I would like to point out that the word “Va’ta’amod” is a different form of the word Amidah, which is the name of our primary form of Davening. As the Rokeach describes to us, it’s almost like the Megillah is hinting that Eshter was involved in prayer before venturing into the king’s presence uninvited, a most serious situation for which she needed much help from Above.
If that hint isn’t clear enough, then listen to what the Rokeach says additionally. The Rokeach points out that the Gematriah (numerical value) of “Va’ta’amod” (spelled “Malei” [full]--with a Vav [in the middle] is: Vav - Taf - Ayin - Mem - Vav - Daled) is equal in value to that of the word “Batifilah,” in prayer. This indicates that at this most serious moment, Esther “stood in prayer” relying on the only One who could help her and Klal Yisroel in their desperate situation.
