Greeting from Sabah, Borneo Island!
Sun bear is the least known bear species in the world and one of the most neglected large mammals in Southeast Asia. Their survival faces many threats including deforestation, poaching for body parts, traditional medicines, and pet trades. Conservation of an endangered species is not a job for one person or one country. Successful conservation projects need the supports and help from the general public, all the way to the top level of government and involve many countries. Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre Japan is an important project for sun bear conservation because it links the people of Japan and the island of Borneo and its rainforest.
This project started during the pandemic of COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2 where almost all countries in the world, and billions of people in the world are greatly affected. This pandemic shows all human in the world is affecting one another; we all live on the same planet that is very fragile, and in serious need from all of us to protect it. Sun bears play very important ecological roles to keep our tropical forest healthy. A healthy forest is needed by all human on Earth because forests provide clean air, clean water, stable climate and many more.
I have been studying and working on the conservation of sun bears for the past 22 years. All of these threats make me extremely worry about the future of sun bears and their survival to the next century. Therefore, I am grateful to Dr. Hisashi Matsubayashi for initiating this meaningful program in Japan and to involve Japanese in sun bear conservation. I hope you can help the sun bears through this project so that our forest is healthy, and our next generation can continue to enjoy a healthy forest and healthy sun bear population in these forests!

ボルネオ島サバ州からこんにちは！
マレーグマは世界のクマの中で最も謎が多く、東南アジアの大型哺乳類の中で最も軽視されている種です。彼らは森林伐採、密猟、漢方薬、そしてペット取引など、様々な要因に生存を脅かされています。絶滅危惧種の保全は、個人や一国の仕事ではありません。効果的な保全には、多くの国が連携すること、そして一般市民から政府までの支援があることが必要です。そのため、日本の皆さんとボルネオ熱帯雨林を繋げる Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre Japan は、マレーグマの保全にとって大切なプロジェクトです。
このプロジェクトは、世界中の国と数億人の人々が大きな影響を受けている、SARS-CoV-2によって引き起こされた新型コロナウィルス感染症（COVID-19）のパンデミックの最中に動き出しました。このパンデミックは、私たちに、人間は皆互いに影響しあっていることを教えてくれました。私たちは皆、地球という繊細な星に住んでおり、皆でこの星を守る必要があります。健全な森林は、綺麗な空気、綺麗な水、安定した気候などを提供してくれるため、人間の生活には必要不可欠です。マレーグマは、そのような森林を維持する上で、とても重要な生態学的な役割を担っています。
22年間、私はマレーグマの研究・保全に携わってきました。しかし、先にも述べたような脅威によって、近年マレーグマの個体数は減少の傾向にあり、私は彼らの未来と後世まで生きながらえるのかを考えると、非常に不安になります。そのため、日本の皆さんもマレーグマの保全に関われるよう、このプロジェクトを立ち上げてくれた松林尚志さんには、とても感謝しています。健全な森林とマレーグマが後世まで存続できるよう、皆さんのご協力をよろしくお願いいたします。
