11 Church Walk (The Old School House)

The Old Schoolhouse

Description

The School and School House were originally formed as a single T-shaped building of red brick with white brick dressings and slated roofs in Tudor style, built 1846.

The School, an open hall of three bays, was entered by a porch against the East bay, but this replaced a central feature. The School House was two-storied and formed a cross wing to the School; a chimney between the two served fireplaces in the corresponding corners of the ground floor rooms. The School could accommodate up to sixty boys and girls. It closed c.1920. Thereafter the school building was used for social activities by the village. The house attached to the school was let, with the tenant acting as a caretaker for the building. The school and house were demolished in the early 1970s.

The present building on the site, a bungalow, is named The Old Schoolhouse but has no connection to the former buildings. The planning application for its erection was submitted on 1 January 1969 and approved on 11 June 1969.
