Fri st Lesson: Isaiah 44:6-8

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel

and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:

I am the first and I am the last;

besides me there is no god.

Who is like me? Let them proclaim it,

let them declare and set it forth before me.

Who has announced from of old the things to come?

Let them tell us what is yet to be.

Do not fear, or be afraid;

have I not told you from of old and declared it?

You are my witnesses!

Is there any god besides me?

There is no other rock; I know not one.

C: And also with you.

A: You are the treasured people of the Lord,

C: a people holy to the Lord our God.

A: Keep the words of the Lord in your heart; teach them to your children.

C: Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.

A: One does not live by bread alone,

C: but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

Psalm 86:11-17 (may be chanted or spoken responsively)

Teach me your way, O Lord,

that I may walk in your truth;

give me an undivided heart to revere your name.

I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,

and I will glorify your name for ever.

For great is your steadfast love towards me;

you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

O God, the insolent rise up against me;

a band of ruffians seeks my life,

and they do not set you before them.

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

Turn to me and be gracious to me;

give your strength to your servant;

save the child of your serving-maid.

Show me a sign of your favour,

so that those who hate me may see it and be put to shame,

because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Second Lesson : Romans 8:12-25

So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Gospel Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

P: The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the13th chapter.

C: Glory to you, O Lord.

He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, “Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?” He answered, “An enemy has done this.” The slaves said to him, “Then do you want us to go and gather them?” But he replied, “No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, ‘Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.’ He answered, ‘The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!

A: In Christ you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance towards redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14

C: We believe in the Christ and are marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit.

P: Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith, the faith in which we place our lives.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen

P: Beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit.

C: We look forward to the mercy of our Lord Christ Jesus that leads to eternal life. Jude 20-21

C: Everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 2 Corinthians 5:17

P: God has given us the ministry of reconciliation. Therefore, let us be reconciled to God and to one another.

Silence for reflection

P: Gracious God,

C: have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone. Uphold us by your Spirit so that we may live and serve you and others in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Offering & Presentation of Gifts and Breads

(After the collection is presented,, the Elements of Communion are brought forward along with the breads listed in the litany. After the Pastor has received the Elements each bread is announced and received by the Pastor.)

Stand

A: From the grains of God’s earth are we fed:

C: The home baked bread of the loving home,

A: The store bought loaf of our busy world,

C: The sweet coffee cake of community and friendship,

A: The unleavened bread of the flight to freedom.

C: For these we thank you, O God.

P: As we partake of your bread remind us of those for whom the grain has not grown and for whom famine is a constant ache; for whom the grain has been stolen or sold at a loss; for whom the grain has been destroyed in wars and acts of terrorism; for whom the grain has been left behind as they flee persecution and become refugees; for whom grain is a necessity they cannot afford. Show us the way to share your grain, your bread and your gifts as you have shared yourself with us in the bread and wine that is Christ, our Savior, feeding us with heavenly food so that the body and blood of our Lord may give us the strength and courage to do what is right, to reach out to the lonely, the unlovely, the grieving, the frightened, the wounded, the hungry, the stranger, to walk the Way of truth.

C: Amen.

Post-Communion Prayer

Sung Response with Reading: "The Righteous Will Ask"

Text and Music: Lisa Frenz

Cantor: The righteous will ask, “Oh, Lord, when did I serve you? When did I serve you? When?” And the Lord will reply,

Congregation: "Whatever you did to the least of my family, least of my family, you have done to me. You have done to me."

A: (spoken over music)

But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’

Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’

The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’ Matthew 25:31-40

Prayer Attributed to St. Francis (spoken over music)

A:

Lord, make us instruments of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let us sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is discord, union;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that we may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and

it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

C: Amen..

.P: God has blessed us greatly, satisfying the hunger of both our bodies and our souls. Let us go and do the same, taking this nourishment to the world we live in.

C: Amen. We ask God to help and guide us.
