P: In the quiet of the night

A woman gives birth:

A personal act of faith;

Accepting God's charge upon her.

A: In the quiet of the night

A husband becomes a father:

A personal act of faith;

Accepting God's charge upon him.

P: In the quiet of the night

A baby breathes the air:

A personal act of sacrifice;

God steps out of the divine into the mundane

For us.

Lesson Isaiah 9:2-7

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased its joy; they rejoice before thee as with joy at the harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as on the day of Mid'ian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Song: "O Little Town of Bethlehem" Vs. 1-2

Tune Name: ST. LOUIS

Text Source: Text: Phillips Brooks, 1835-1893

Music Source: Music: Lewis H. Redner, 1831-1908

O little town of Bethlehem,

how still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

the silent stars go by;

yet in thy dark streets shineth

the everlasting light.

The hopes and fears of all the years

are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary,

and, gathered all above

while mortals sleep, the angels keep

their watch of wond'ring love.

O morning stars, together

proclaim the holy birth,

and praises sing to God the king,

and peace to all the earth!

P: O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!

C: Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.

A: Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!

C: For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.

P: For all the gods of the peoples are idols; but the LORD made the heavens.

C: Honor and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

A: Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!

C: Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!

P: Worship the LORD in holy array; tremble before him, all the earth!

C: Say among the nations, "The LORD reigns! Yea, the world is established, it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity."

A: Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;

C: let the field exult, and everything in it!

P: Then shall all the trees of the wood sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth.

C: He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.

Song: "Joy to the World" vs. 1, 4

Tune Name: ANTIOCH

Text Source: Text: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748

Music Source: Music: George F. Handel, 1685-1759, adapt.; arr. Lowell Mason, 1792-1872

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive its King;

let ev'ry heart prepare him room

and heav'n and nature sing,

and heav'n and nature sing,

and heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.

He rules the world with truth and grace

and makes the nations prove

the glories of his righteousness

and wonders of his love,

and wonders of his love,

and wonders, wonders of his love.

Gospel Luke 2:1-14

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirin'ius was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"

Song: "On Christmas Night"

Tune: Sussex Carol

Text: Luke Wadding, d. 1686, alt

On Christmas night all Christians sing,

To hear the news the angels bring;

On Christmas night all Christians sing,

To hear the news the angels bring;

News of great joy, news of great mirth,

News of our merciful King's birth.

Then why should we on earth be so sad,

Since our Redeemer made us glad?

Then why should we on earth be so sad,

Since our Redeemer made us glad?

When from our sins He set us free

All for to gain our liberty?

When sin departs before His grace,

Then life and health come in its place;

When sin departs before His grace,

Then life and health come in its place;

Then we and angels with joy may sing,

All for to see the new-born King.

All out of darkness we have light,

Which made the angels sing this night;

All out of darkness we have light,

Which made the angels sing this night:

"Glory to God and peace to all,

Now and forevermore, Amen."

Gospel Luke 2:15-20

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
