iPad Tips

1. Assistive Accessibility Settings on an iPad http://hubpages.com/hub/iPad-Accessibility-Options-for-Special-Education-Classrooms

2. To make a screen grab press the home button and the on/off button at the same time. If it works it will make a camera shutter sound and the screen grab will be in the Photos.

3. There are volume up/volume down buttons on the side of the iPad/iPod Touch. There is a mute switch on the side. You will be able to see a little bit of orange if it is on mute.

4. Double tapping the home button takes you to the individual apps that you have open. Flick an app up to completely close it.

5. Double tapping the space bar when typing give you a full stop. If you want to just write one number hold down the 123 numbers key and slide your finger to the number. It will automatically go back to letters when you release the number key.

6. If you realise you have made a mistake when you are typing you go to the mistake and press down to get to the exact spot you need to correct. If you accidentally highlight and delete what you are writing, shake your iPad to get to the UNDO button.

7. If the iPad starts playing up you can do a hard restart by holding the home and the on/off button until the iPad switches off and restarts and you see the Apple logo.

8. There is a headphone hole on the side- you can use it to make you iPad/iPod Touch into a listening post with a splitter. Belkin five person splitter

9. In a classroom setting I would enable restrictions on your device so children cannot inadvertently delete an app. To see how you would do that read the blog post here.

10. Printing from an iPod Touch, iPad or iPhone. I have found the easiest way to print from my iPod Touch or iPad is to have downloaded Printopia on to my Apple laptop. That's all you have to do. There is a free trial and then actual software costs about $25 which is worth it. When you have done the download anything that your laptop can print to your i iPad can print to too. If you would not normally have to print wirelessly from your laptop you will still have to have to USB cord to your printer plugged in. Easy as.

  • Similarly oPrint may well serve the same purpose and work in the same way as Printopia would do on a Mac. I don't have any Windows gear to practice with and would be interested to find out how people found it.

Similarly FingerPrint or oPrint may well serve the same purpose and work in the same way as Printopia would do on a Mac. I don't have any Windows gear to practice with and would be interested to find out how people found it.

11. If you want to add a Keynote or the like to your iPad, while synching, you will need to look under the apps, enable the Keynote app and drag the files you want to synch to iPad and re-synch. Here is the blog post of how to do it. Or you can use iCloud.

12. To do screen recording tutorials of your iPad use http://reflectionapp.com/ to mirror your iPad to your laptop. Then record, full screen using Quicktime screen recording. You can use it in ten minute bursts instead of buying the full version.

Similarly you can use Air Server to mirror your iOS device. It has a free seven day trial then it is priced similarly to Reflection. I have not actually used it so can't comment on its effectiveness.

13. X Mirage works similarly to Reflector with the added bonus in that it acts as a Window so it is super easy to flick between your ordinary window and you mirrored iPad window. You can also use it to record a screencast with narration.

14. How to hide purchases that you may have made by mistake.

15. Reflecting your iPad onto your laptop
