Handley High School Yearbooks

(see the procedure below for accessing the yearbooks)

Edna (Reeves) Anderson, Handley High School Class of 1932, at the age of 97 is the oldest surviving alumni (known to me).  She provided the Class of 1932 Memory Book for scanning.  She is also an alumni of Texas Wesleyan College where she got her Master of Education degree.  (Click on the picture to see it a larger format.  Then click the back arrow to return to this page.)

A commenting feature has been enabled on this page.  So if you would like to post a comment pertaining to one of the yearbooks (such as "Look at

page 34 of the 1945 yearbook and see so-and-so.")  Please feel free to add your comments and observations in the box below.

Downloading of Yearbooks

Most of the time you'll get a better copy by downloading the Acrobat version by clicking on the File menu and selecting "Download."  This will permit opening the yearbook using the Acrobat Reader (after it has downloaded to your own computer) rather than displaying the yearbook in your web browser.  See below the links for a detailed procedure for downloading an Adobe Acrobat version of the Yearbook to your personal computer.  Below the yearbook links I've included an explanation about how the scanning was done.

Fort Worth History

History Note:  Click on the following link to access a book on the history of

Fort Worth that is online.  It discusses J. Frank Norris the Baptist preacher

who murdered one of his church members back in the 1930s.  Did you know that there is a J. Frank Norris who was a member of the 1925 Track Team.

I wonder if the track team member was the son of the preacher.  Also, the

history covers the O. D. Stevens robbery in Handley back in the 1930s.

Did you know that there was an O. D. Stevens in the 1937 and 1938 Handley High yearbooks?  In the 1937 yearbook he is listed as O. D. Stevens while in the 1938 yearbook he is listed as Olin Stevens.  The "O" in the gangster O. D. Stevens' name stood for "Olin."  I wonder if he was a son of the gangster?  It seems to be too much of a coincidence not to be in view of having the same name and living in the same community.

The link points to the decade by decade unveiling of the history of Fort Worth.  Another link related to the O. D. Stevens caper gives a video tour

of the O. D. Stevens mansion that overlooks the present interstate 30.  The following link will take you to that video:

Do any of you recall hearing stories about O. D. Stevens caper?  My father actually helped construct the O. D. Stevens mansion.  I recall him telling about working on it and about the secret room under the stairwell and another in the well.  In the history of Fort Worth (link above) you'll read about J. Frank Norris in chapters 2 and 3 (with pictures of him in each chapter).  Doing a Google search will yield some interesting discussion of the O. D. Stevens caper along with pictures of the bridge as it existed in those days that crossed the Trinity River north of Handley near the Ederville Road where O. D. Stevens and his accomplice May dumped the bodies of their accomplices after double-crossing them.

If you can assist in locating a copy of any of the missing Yearbooks, please do.  Perhaps with your help we can complete the collection. I believe there are only 3 that are missing: 1925, 1929, and 1939. Surely someone's son, daughter, or grandchild has one of these.

A Synopsis of the History of Handley High School

The first "Handley High School" was built in 1895 and was located at the corner of Church Street and Forest Avenue.  In 1922 the middle building of the final three building complex was built.  Mr. C. S. Carter was the superintendent.  In 1928 the school went into the Fort Worth Independent School District.  In 1929 Edward Munden became the principal.   Mr Luthur T. Scarborough became principal in 1948.  In 1951 the auditorium on the right, and the gymnasium on the left were built.

The 1925 and 1927 yearbooks were called "The Skyrocket."  In 1927 the school colors were yellow and white.  In 1931 the yearbook becomes "The Orion."  By 1937 the yearbook has become "The Greyhound."  In 1937 Miss Odell and Miss Bedell appear as teachers.  Bob Barron was a senior in 1946.

HHS Memory Book for 1932

According to Bobby Young there were no HHS Yearbooks for the years 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, and 1936 due to the effects of the depression.  However, at least for 1932 a Memory Book was produced.  It may be that similar books were produced for those other years as well.  However, so far none other than the one for 1932 have appeared.

 Procedure for accessing the yearbooks

    1.  Click on the respective yearbook link.

    2.  A new page will open that displays the yearbook.

    3.  Click on the File menu (at the upper left of the page) and choose          "Download Original"

    4.  The downloaded pages may have to be resized to fit your screen.  Each browser does this differently.  You'll have to determine how your browser adjusts the size and make the adjustment accordingly.

    5.  If you would like to download an Acrobat version to save on your computer, do the following additional steps:

     a.  Right click on one of the pages and select "Save As."  When the "Save As" screen appears, a default file name will be highlighted (you may use the default or enter another name to use).  Click on the "Save" button and the Adobe Acrobat version of the yearbook will be downloaded to your computer.  The file being downloaded is about 11 megabytes and, therefore, will take a minute or two depending upon the speed of your internet connection.

     b.  After the download is complete, the yearbook file should open automatically in your Acrobat Reader.  If not, locate the downloaded file on your computer and double click on the file name to open it for reading or

printing.

     c.  Finally, after the yearbook downloads and opens in Adobe Acrobat, click on the "Fit One Full Page to Window" icon at the top of the page.  This will display a full page at a time.  The plus and minus buttons may be used to make size adjustments.

The yearbook files are actually stored on the Google Docs system.  They are uploaded as Acrobat files, but the Google Docs facility converts them to the "docs" format for displaying.  This introduces added imperfections to the image.  By taking the added steps above (a, b, and c) you'll be downloading the original Acrobat files that were uploaded that will yield an image that is closer to the original scan.  If you do this you'll probably notice an improvement in the quality of the images displayed.

How the digital Yearbooks were created:

Each page of each Yearbook was scanned using a Canon LIDE 60 flatbed scanner.  The resulting images were saved in Tiff format.  Next each images was edited using IrfanView, a free Image editor, to remove scanning blemishes at the edges of most scans.  Then the set of images for each Yearbook were converted to Jpeg (at 3 different sizes) using a free utility called PicSizer.  A Microsoft Word document was created and the images were imported to create a Word document for each of the 3 sizes.  Then each document was printed to an Adobe Acrobat file at the 3 different resolutions.

The differences in size can be illustrated using the 1957 Yearbook at page 18 from that Yearbook:

Page 18, Tiff Format - 7,131 KBytes

Page 18, Jpeg Format, 100 percent - 464 KBytes

Page 18, Jpeg Format, 85 percent - 128 KBytes

Page 18, Jpeg Format, 75 percent - 90 KBytes

1957 Yearbook using Jpeg Formatted Images 100 percent - 60,125 KBytes

1957 Yearbook using Jpeg Formatted Images 85 percent - 17,216 KBytes

1957 Yearbook using Jpeg Formatted Images 75 percent - 12,276 KBytes

Since the visual difference between the 3 resolutions in the final Adobe Acrobat versions of the Yearbooks was slight, the 75 percent option was used since it gave a final size that was much more manageable.  Creating the digital Yearbooks using the original Tiff scans would have created Yearbooks of over 100,000 KBytes, far too large to be practical.

All images have been saved for archiving should anyone wish to use them in the future for creating Yearbooks using alternative options.
