*** HHS Class of 1959 56th Anniversary Reunion ***

Well, we had the 56th Anniversary Reunion. Everyone seemed to have a great time. The pictures made at the reunion have been posted on the 56th Anniversary Reunion page (click on the link in the column to the right).

Those attending the reunion received disks containing all of the HHS yearbooks that we have been able to collect and scan. The disk also contained a collection of pictures from the past: from Handley School, from Taterhill, and even some vintage pictures.

The following link permits downloading of an Adobe Acrobat file containing the front matter from the printed 4-Volume set of HHS yearbooks. It includes the links for downloading any one or all of the 28 scanned yearbooks from Handley High School and the included indices linking individual graduates with their year of graduation (viz., the relevant yearbook to locate the individual). The document contains about 80 pages.

Can you believe that it has been almost 55 years?

1.  Special Events and Announcements

Lenna Hughes operates the Billy W. Sills Center for Archives for the Fort Worth Independent School District.  The archive is a nice place to visit.  It has quite a lot of school related artifacts from the past in the archive including papers that document the history of Handley both through pictures and narrative composed by various people over time.  (Click on the picture to see a nice enlargement)

Presidential Debate Spoof

I've posted at a video of a spoof on the 1988 presidential debate between George Bush and Michael Dukakis, and the transition from the Reagan to the Bush presidency.  It is very funny.  Click on the following link to view it.  [ Click Here ]

A Lesson  From School

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, "Fried chicken."   She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed.

My parents told me to always tell the truth.  I did.  Fried chicken is my favorite animal.

I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA.  He said they love animals very much.

I do too, especially chicken, pork and beef.  Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office.  I told him what happened, and he laughed, too.  Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was.  I told her it was chicken.  She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken.

She sent me back to the principal's office.  He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don't understand.  My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am.

Today, my teacher asked us to tell her what famous person we admire most.  I told her "Colonel Sanders."  Guess where I am now . . . ?

An Outrageous Thing To Say

My wife Jane just told me that Richard Clark and I had been found out and reported on the broadcast news.  She said, "The newscast reported that scientists had recently discovered the oldest fossils in the world."  I just don't know why she would say such a thing.  It could have been anyone in our class.

Webmaster's Favorite Quotation

Marion Barry (former mayor of Washington D.C.):  "Washington is the safest place in the country except for all those killings."

Thinking Test

We now have a "Thinking Test" designed to give you the intellectual self-confidence to use this web site effectively.  This programmed instruction test has only four questions.  Each question is followed by the rationale for the question and the answer to the question.  Just click on the following link to begin the "Thinking Test."

4.  Special Requests

Add Your Thoughts to Our Web Site

We're waiting to hear from you.

The game is already in process, you are at bat, the bases are loaded, and your team mates are waiting for you to hit the ball.  The pitcher is winding up and about to throw the ball.  Will it be a strike or a home run?  Hit the ball by sending me your contributions.  The pitcher has thrown a perfect pitch that's heading right through the strike zone.

It's your turn . . .

5.  Special Features

There are 2 essays which I have written that discuss financial planning that I wish to make available to my classmates who might be interested.  Both papers are posted on my personal web site where they may be downloaded.  To access either paper simply click on the respective essay title which includes a link that will take you to my personal web site where you can access the essay.

The most recent essay is "A Brief Essay on Financial Planning" that I wrote primarily for my family, but then decided to share it with my classmates who might be interested in the subject.

The other essay "Determining Amounts That May Be More Safely Withdrawn During Retirement From Accumulated Savings and Investments" looks at the problem of planning the use of retirement assets in the context of an unknown lifetime.  It gives a simple, high confidence method for maximizing the annual "draw" from those assets in such a way as to minimize the risk of depleting those assets before the end of life.

Another document has been posted on my personal web site that pertains to genealogy and documenting one's family tree.

For quite a number of years now I have been documenting my family tree. I began many years ago compiling information gleaned from older family members such as my grandmother. I entered the information collected into a family tree program. My collection is presently quite extensive, largely through the contributions of others that I was able to locate through internet sources. However, in the last few years a new facility has become available that is truly remarkable. The facility is called Find-A-Grave, and it provides a remarkably effective way to collaborate with others in extending knowledge of one's family and lineage. I've provided a little more information on my own personal web site that you can take a look at if you are sufficiently interested. Click on the following link to go there:

A Tribute to HHS Classmates and Teachers

This "tribute" was delivered at the HHS Class of 1959's 50th Anniversary Reunion as an after dinner speech.  A preface has been added as a word of explanation so that its relevance to others might be a bit more clear.  This modified version is provided here for the benefit of other alumni of HHS.  It may be that your experience paralleled ours.  Click on the link below to view it.  You can decide if it speaks to your own experience at HHS.

A Note Regarding Older Special Features

Prior special features have been moved to other pages.  The contribution by Mrs. Jacks has been moved to the "Contributions by Our Classmates" page.

A Bit of Humor: A Biologist, a Physicist, & a Mathematician

A biologist, a physicist, and a mathematician were sitting in a street cafe watching the crowd.  Across the street they saw a man and a woman enter a building.  After ten minutes they observe them to reappear with a third person.

The biologist remarked, "They have multiplied."

The physicist responded, "Oh, no, you've simply made an error in measurement."

The mathematician observed, "If exactly one person enters the building now, it will be empty again."
