Daring to Dream: The State of Immigration Reform in 2014, Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 6-8pm, at the Tobin School on 40 Smith St, Roxbury
This year at Sociedad Latina we have been excited to read and share the book Into The Beautiful North as part of our annual Big Read initiative-a book of fiction, but that touches on the very real stories of the immigrant experience coming to the United States today. As part of our final keynote celebration, we are inviting our community to come and learn with us a bit more about the immigrant experience in Massachusetts as well as the national immigration reform movement. Please join Sociedad in this meaningful discussion, moderated by Marcela Garcia, Boston Globe Opinion and Editorial Page Contributor. Panelists include:Dr. Oscar Santos, Headmaster, Cathedral High School; Patricia Montes, Executive Director of Centro Presente; Dr. Eileen de los Reyes, Deputy Superintendent of Academics, Boston Public Schools (invited) For extra credit, respond to these questions in detailed, vibrant paragraphs: 1)Why did you chose to attend this event? What is your own relationship to immigration and immigration reform? 2) Speak with someone from Sociedad Latina. Identify yourself and why you are there. Record their name, what they do at Sociedad Latina, and how their Latin@ identify affects their experience of the world. In your own words, what is Sociedad Latina? (Who is it for, what do they do, how can you get involved?). 3)What did you see/feel/experience at the event? Who attended? Who presented? Were the populations different? 4) Record three main points from each panelist. With whom did you most identify, and why? With whom did you most disagree, and why? 5) What questions did audience members ask? What questions are you left with?
