2) Tour of Hyde Square (in Spanish) ~ Saturday September 14th at 11am sharp (plan to arrive a bit early!) Jamaica Plain historical society tours are free to the public and last between 60 and 90 minutes and are canceled in case of heavy rain. 3) “Las Magníficas” performance on Tuesday, September 24th at 7:30 pm. The chamber music theatre group Core Ensemble will premiere in Jewett Auditorium at Wellesley College.Scored for cello, piano, percussion and singing actress, Las Magníficas” is based on the lives of two renowned Latin American singers: Celia Cruz, the Cuban “Queen of Salsa” and Chilean singer-songwriter Violeta Parra, “the Mother of Latin American Folk Music”. The script was created by Marjorie Agosín, award-winning Chilean-American poet. teacher and social justice activist who has gained notability for her work on behalf of women's rights in Latin America, and in particular, Chile. The United Nations has honored Agosin her for her work on human rights. This work is filled with music popularized by Cruz and Parra: Gracias a la Vida, Tu Voz, La Vida es un Carnaval and Volver a los 17 -as well as instrumental music by other Latin American Composers such as Ernesto Lecuona, Victor Jara, and Tania Leon. The narrative illuminates the social and political struggles and triumphs of Cruz and Parra.
FREE and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
