Timpanogas/Timpooneke

The back side of Timpanogas is a wonderful hike. Camp at Timpooneke campground or nearby free sites and leave early the next morning up the Timpooneke trail to the top of Timpanogas Peak so it’s not too hot by the time you get to the top. In the early summer there are snow banks to slide down, take some plastic. Take a jacket, even in summer it can be cold and windy at the summit. To get there, go up American Fork Canyon past Timpanogas cave and take a right at the fork to the Timpooneke campground. To camp at the pay campground make reservations months ahead at reserveamerica.com, if before September 5th. From September 5 to October 15 the campground is first come first serve and closed after that. http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/timpooneke/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70128

There are also some places that you can camp for free. Many of them fill up by 6:00 pm in the summer. Most notable is Salamander Flats just a mile past the Timpooneke turn off.

If it's filled up, go another two miles and turn left onto highway 114 and immediately you will see a turnoff going down to the right. There are a couple good sites there, the best one going right from the loop. Going further down 114 a mile and a half is a large open space on the right and just past that on the left is another small camping spot. I understand that there are more spots further down 114 towards Cascade Springs.
