GRANVVILLE: I initially balked at doing it. It features rather unsavory episodes. In one scene, I’m tied to a post and whipped. Then my Nazi boy friend suggests we have an illegitimate baby of pure German stock for the Fatherland that we can give away. Nobody knew it was going to be RKO’s biggest profit maker of the year. How that stuff got through the censors was amazing but I was later told because it was the Nazis we were allowed to go all out. The word got out it was very daring and, of course, audiences flocked to see it.
