With power to add to their number

A meeting was held of the Congregation was held in the Parish Church on Tuesday, 23rd of September, 1919, to consider in what form a Memorial should be put up to the Clapham men who had died in the war. It was resolved that a large Cross, with a suitable inscription, should be erected in the churchyard opposite the west door of the church, and that the names of those that have fallen should be recorded on tablets inside the Church. It was decided that a Committee should be formed to carry out the work, and the above-named gentlemen were appointed, with power to add to their number. The Committee feel sure that the inhabitants of Clapham generally will welcome this opportunity of putting up an enduring and worthy Memorial to the brave men of Clapham who helped to win the great Victory and who died that England might live.

They know that the matter is one very near to the hearts, not only of those who have lost husband, son or brother, but also of those whose dear ones have returned safely, and of those who realise what we all owe to the dead and to the living who saved England from the horrors of invasion.

It is not possible at this time to give any definite estimate of the amount that will be required, but it cannot be less than six or seven hundred pounds. If, through the generous response which the Committee confidently anticipate, a much larger sum should be raised, the Memorial could be so much the more noble and beautiful a reminder to future generations of the devotion to duty, the patriotism and self-sacrifice of Clapham men, who should never be forgotten.

It is earnestly desired that all who can should take part in this work, without distinction of creed, and the very smallest contributions will be most gladly received and acknowledged. All donations should be sent to the

Hon. Treasurer Mr. Robert S. Johnson, 28, Crescent Grove, Clapham Common, S.W.4.

The Committee would send to anyone interested who would assist in collecting small sums.

William Francis Carr

The Committee beg to append a list of the names at present known to them of Clapham men who fell in the war, and would be glad to have any additional names submitted to them to be recorded in the Church. They wish it to be understood that only names of men who had been resident in or closely associated with the Parish of Clapham can be included.
