Ross Mayfield

Raised in Azusa, Ross Mayfield began his journey into music in the 4th grade, when he learned to play trombone. By 7th grade, Ross had picked up bass guitar, initially learning to play by ear. Joining the local community college jazz band in 1975 Ross honed his sight-reading abilities. Ross played bass in a couple of Southern California jazz big bands before moving to the central coast in 1985. After a short hiatus, he joined the Hancock College Jazz Ensemble and, in 2009, the Central City Swing band.

Says Ross, "Playing bass in a jazz big band is one of my favorite things to do, and playing in this band, with it's high level of musicianship, really challenges and sharpens your musical abilities. It is always amazing to me when 17 people can sit down together and play a piece of music that they have never seen before, and make it sound really great. I feel very lucky to be a part of this group."

In addition to playing bass guitar with the Central City Swing band, Ross has played first and second trombone with the Hancock College Concert Band.
