Tim Towne began (seriously) studying drums at the age of 18 when he sought out BillDouglass as a teacher to learn sight reading, rudiments; and drum set. In 1980, after attending Los Angeles Trade-Technical College to study printing technologies, Tim enrolled at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington where he earned his Associate of Arts in percussion performance in 1982. While at Harbor College Tim played in the concert and small jazz ensembles as well as the 8 o’clock jazz band conducted by Ken Miller who also taught jazz theory and arrangement as part of the overall music curriculum. While at Harbor, Tim had the opportunity to study with guest teachers including John Perrett (Ray Charles; Ron Eschete; Don Rader…) and Judy Chilnick (Merv Griffin Show) while also studying privately. In 1982 Tim transferred to Cal State Dominguez Hills to complete his Bachelor of Arts in percussion performance in 1984. Between 1982-1987, Tim studied rudimental snare technique with master technician Richard Wilson who taught many of today’s top-tier drummers including Vinnie Colaiuta and David Garibaldi, to name a few. Tim served in the 562nd Air Force Band (Van Nuys Air National Guard) from November 1980 – November 1986 and was honorably discharged achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.
In addition to playing with Central City Swing, Tim has played with the Allen Hancock College concert and jazz bands; Santa Maria Philharmonic; in addition to small ensemble and other musical endeavors around the central coast since moving from the Los Angeles area in 1995.
When not working his day gig as cybersecurity engineer, Tim enjoys swimming, caring for his dogs Phoebe and Ringo, and planning family activities.
