Beverly Young started playing flute under the direction of Lee Statom at age 10, and quickly learned the tenor sax in 7th grade in order to join the jazz band. While attending Arroyo Grande High School, she played with Warren Balfour's Cuesta Night Jazz band and Bob Swayze’s Big Band (one of the earlier ones) in her “after school hours”. At Cal Poly she went on to play in all of Cal Poly Bands’ programs. Music took a back seat when she embarked on her teaching career at the California Mens’ Colony in San Luis Obispo, where she spent the next 29-years playing her sax only occasionally. Upon retirement, she quickly returned to her true love of playing music.
She performs with the San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra, Hancock College Concert Band, Cuesta Wind Ensemble, Atascadero Community Band, Cuesta College Night Jazz band, Riptide Big Band, and the Simply Saxes quartet. A native of the Central Coast, she loves the peace and quiet of the area, and simply enjoys whatever life brings her way.
