BSDRA Southerns 2022 Report

We kicked off the summer sailing season with the BSDRA Southern Championship on Saturday 30th April 2022. The event was organised by Winchester College and held at Spinnaker Sailing Club. There was a high level of interest and we had 16 teams competing – we even had to turn down a few second team entries, although every school who wanted to bring a team was able to do so.

The day began with a light, variable, breeze, with the first race starting at around 0950hrs. The course manager had some difficulty maintaining a suitable racing course and after the first dozen or so races we had to postpone for lunch due to lack of consistent wind. Fortunately, the afternoon brought a decent sea breeze and good sailing conditions, and we got through the remaining races in the schedule up to race 64, with each team racing 8 times. At the end of the round robin, RHS Blue went through to the knockouts with 7 out of 8 race wins, along with MCS, Ryde Black and Claires Court who had 6 race wins each.

In the semis, MCS faced off against Ryde Black, with MCS winning 2-1. RHS Blue faced Claire's Court, winning 2-0, leading to a nailbiting final between MCS and RHS Blue, with MCS winning 2-1. Final standings were 1st place - MCS, 2nd place - RHS Blue and 3rd Place - Ryde Black.

Thank you to all our helpers for pulling together to bring off an excellent event, with special thanks to Tom Clay, our Chief Umpire, and Keith Sammons, our Principal Race Officer.
