The War in Heaven

Who were they who with awful ruin and unisexed,
Expelled from mercy's seat and eternal rest,
Who looking back were horrified at the dreaded sound
Of Heaven's door fast shut, no access found?
Closed tight.....the way made up,
With others of their kind to guard its top.
This countless G-d made rebel host,
Who were they? And why turn away from the eternal light
To seek new abodes in endless night?
Where did they land?
And did they make a final stand?
Though broken spirited and much dismayed,
What was their crime and what betrayed?
What lost, that each had once possessed?
What was it that they en-masse did so detest?
How could such a thing in Heaven be so conceived?
If told on Earth, for certain by most would be disbelieved.
How can such a thing where purity reigns, begin?
How can the Heaven we are taught of be so soiled with sin?,
Was there? Is there in Heaven some darkened place
Where plots are hatched by a G-dly yet treacherous race?
If so, how do they find comfort where
The Almighty reigns supreme and is everywhere?
On Earth it's taught how glorious is the eternal face.
How it radiates love all over the place.
Surely such love is too pure for sin to bear.
A puzzle indeed is this whole affair.
So the question arises, how did this defilement enter in?
Is there jealousy in Heaven, ambition, seeds of sin?
If so, in what angelic heart did they first arise?
Surely in Heaven there can be no disguise?
So what is its nature and how did it begin?
How can there be in Heaven seeds of sin?
And why were they allowed to so increase
Disturbing that most wonderful Heavenly peace?
How did it contaminate the hearts of the angels there
With treason against their maker and cause them to war?
