High Hopes
No want of words or lack of breath
Do we hear when we are asked to vote
For Parliamentary Candidates
Who say bold deeds they'll promote.
So we put our crosses in a little box
Which dignifies their ambition
But how often will they re-appear
And will their promises reach fruition.
They'll make their way to the House on the Thames
Their maiden speech to prepare,
But will their words so carefully prepared
Lift their constituents out of despair?
Will the over fifties who've lost their jobs
Be exhilarated by their cause?
Will the youth who've never been employed
Burst out in wild applause?
Do they have the appeal of a Churchill?
Or make waves that will capsize the boat?
Is he or she that one in a million?
Can they keep their constituents afloat?
I'm asking this and I'm sure I speak
For the millions of voters who fear
That their way of life and livelihood
May be decided by an auctioneer.
