Creation
'Tis said that G-d created this vast ball
From nothing, and from nothing came forth all.
No place for nature to possess,
Only unbounded emptiness.
And that he then all things willed,
Before they were he them fulfilled.
And buried deep in all this matter
Lay seeds that only time could scatter.
Soon warming fires would leap up high,
Followed by air to fill the sky.
Then Earth, fixed to the navel of the universe
Was born 'midst waters so perverse
That bounds were set at which in vain
They roar, but must by law turn back again.
Next to light the world is seen a flame,
Like that greater light from whence it came.
And the Moon with borrowed locks of gold
A lesser task is set she's told.
And attending Stars will be her train,
To rise with her and set again.
Soon, herbs and trees abundant stood,
With scented flowers and verdant wood.
Then flocks of birds took to the air,
Joyful and free without a care.
And Fish, no less witness to his praise,
Of these he made in wondrous ways.
Beasts too appeared, could there be more?
Yes! Man came last to go before.
In Man all things first made were now applied,
From dust to angel with death their guide.
