How To Remove the Steering Column Cover
The steering column cover needs to be removed to access key wires, or to upgrade the wiper switch.
Like most panels on the xB, the steering column cover is held in place by a number of clips. By pushing in the right places, the steering column cover can be removed.
Push inwards on both sides of the steering column cover at the same time to force the clips open (LHS shown).
On 2011 and later, adjust the steering wheel to maximum extension and maximum depression to give yourself more room between the upper steering column cover and the dashboard.
Work your way around both edges to free the clips, then ease the cover over the ignition switch. There is one more push clip on the underside, then the lower cover will drop free.
Here is a picture of the underside of the steering column. The gray wire (red arrow) gets +12volts when the ignition switch is in the IGN position. I tapped off this wire and ran a new gray wire (blue arrow) to power my Daytime Running Lights.
To reinstall the covers, put the top cover on first, then the bottom cover.
