I've had my xB since May of 2011 and so far I really like the interior room, practicality and versitility.
Most of the time I ride solo as I commute to and from work, or run errands.
Others have commented on how easy it would have been for Toyota/Scion to make the xB into a light duty hauler.
Sometimes I daydream about this. If someone would sponsor me and/or provide me with an xB, I'd like to do something like this:
I'd keep the rear window and roofline, but move it forward to function as the rear part of the cab. I'd keep the same wheelbase and suspension. I'd add the pickup bed and tailgate from a Toyota pickup.
Naturally when you remove the roof of a unibody car, a lot of structural rigidity is lost. So I'd have to add some structural steel below the bed, ahead of the rear wheels, and tie that structure to the rest of the car.
Shown above is the interior of the car, trunk lid open, looking forward. The green represents vertical steel square tubing tied to the door columns, the light blue represents horzontal steel square tubing welded to the existing floor under the pickup bed, and the medium blue represents a steel sheet between the verticals.
Shown above is a side view of the internal bracing.
Yes it's just a dream, for now....
