How To Remove the Driver's Knee Panel
Removal of the driver's knee panel allows you to remove, replace, or add switches or access certain electrical wires.
Like most panels on the xB, the driver's knee panel is held on by a number of clips. By pulling the panel straight back towards the trunk, the panel can be removed. I pull in 5 places, as indicated by the red arrows in the picture on the right. I start at the lower right corner and work my way counterclockwise around the edge of the panel.
Starting on the RHS, on the side closest to the center console, pull on the bottom edge. Pull towards the rear of the car. You can feel the clip behind the panel with your fingers by reaching up behind the panel. As you pull, work your way counter clockwise around the edge of the panel.
With the right edge free, pull at the upper center edge. Here I am using my thumb to also push against the dashboard.
Pull the panel above the switches, and also pull the panel at a location close to the hood release.
Here is the panel removed and dangling by the switch wires. The connectors allow quck disconnect and reconnect.
Switches shown here, from left to right: fog lights (gray with white connector), Traction Control (black with white connector), and Tire Pressure Monitoring System reset (black with black connector).
Here is the backside of the panel.
Replacing the panel is easy, just reconnect the electical connectors, then align the panel to the dash and push the panel back into place.
Here is the electrical box mounted on the firewall exposed by removing the panel. The red circle is the 8 conductor socket that leads to the dome light, but only 3 positions are used:
upper left is constant ground
middle right is constant power
lower left is fade-in/fade-out ground
These last two wires can be used when adding on LED door and/or interior lights.
The red arrow points to a heavy guage blue wire which also provides constant +12v power, I tapped off of this with my red wire (with an inline fuse of course) then insulated the splice with black electrical tape.
Use caution when dealing with electrical circuits. A replacement ECU for the dome light is about $400.
