20 years later...
The show returned to television on 10th September 2021. Speculation was rife. With Lock Keepers cottage now a residential home how would the new production team replicate the iconic feel of broadcasting live from a real house every day? As luck would have it, summer 2021 saw the show's original home put up for sale. The production team successfully negotiated borrowing it for a day meaning The Big Breakfast came home.
The house of 2021 was vastly different to the one left behind in 2002. A decade of abuse from the rigours of live TV then the damage caused by the 2002 fire had been lovingly restored. The house was now a luxury family home in the shadow of the Olympic Park.
Much of the house was off limits and, with the house up for sale, any changes made by the production team had to be temporary.
The house's muted nuetral walls were covered with temporary vinyls. For the first time since the early 90s fried eggs returned to the walls of the kitchen - this time with a blue backing. As with the Vaughan era an iconic Smeg fridge was put in place - along with a toaster and kettle as part of a product placement deal.
Blue diagonal stripes decorated the former hallway - now a dining area for the Family of the Week.
The living room was returned to a familiar form. Two seats infront of the patio windows with TV to the side. Somehow the show looked brighter than ever with yellow & pink walls and a fruit-salad coloured pattern behing the presnters. The house featured a number of IKEA drawers/cabinets painted with bright colours and slogans such as 'Rise & Shine' and 'Wakey Wakey'. These were commissioned especially by the show and painted by Joel Poole at Populuxe.
The only room available for use upstairs became Judi's bodour. Two single beds rather than the traditional (COVID rules, sorry!) with contrasting stripes adorning the walls.
Outside, the show's original pool and wall remained but the mural was updated with a funky colour pattern and the show's logo in pink.
In May 2022 it was confirmed that the house had been sold to a very lucky (and wealthy) new owner. With the moving in day set for June 2022 and further revival of the show would need a new home...
