In 2000 Bow Locks & the official Big Breakfast forum got a chance to pose a few questions to Johnny. Here's the transcript.
From Blue Eyes
Johnny,
Are you going to be there for the birth of your baby, and if so, It will be the best experience of your life !
*Yes I intend to be there for the birth.
Do you ever POST anything on the forum, under another name ? (we don't want to know which name you use, as it would spoil the fun of us all guessing)
*Yes I do - though I’ve stopped recently as I either logged off feeling irritated/misunderstood/down or arrogant. Both states are bad for the ego.
from smeg_head Hmm tricky questions?
Which is more important to you - Chelsea or The Harvster?
*I’ll have Harvey for all of his life, Chelsea will have me for all of mine.
Does baby on the way spell the end as far as The Brekkie is concerned. (after all you won't get as much sleep as before!)
*Don’t know. I really wish I could give a straight answer to the whole leaving the Brekkie thing. There’s no other show I want to do - or which will suit me as well - but there’s this ‘force’ in TV that forces everyone to move on to things they’re shit at.
What's your favourite film ever? (I know you like the Straight Story but is that just the best film of 1999) *Varies, there’s so many films I love-
Bad Day At Black Rock
The Searchers (Wayne/John Ford)
The Castle
The Shootist
Shane
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence
The Ford/Wayne Calvery Trilogy
Seriously, though...From Early Riser
What is your reaction to viewers believing your anti-French/German taunts to be real xenophobia, and consequently holding you up as a talisman and justification not only for the ridicule of other nations but even less savoury right-wing traits, like anti-immigrant prejudice?
*I don’t take any notice. I try to lampoon the narrow-minded bigots of the right and left. Politically my own views of Europe are the same as Tony Benn. Nothing against French + Germans all I try and highlight is that both nations are out for what they can get from the E.U. Having said that I have never had a good experience with a German.
From Dougal
As the normal British media's method of dealing with celebrities is to built them up and then knock them down, are you worried that whatever project you do after the BB will be criticised because it's your time to feel the sharp edge of the media's cruel, cruel knife, rather than the relative merits of the project itself?
*Yes that does worry me. You have to do what you find engaging, challenging and enjoyable. But if a show is loved by some it’ll be hated by others.
from Little One
Did you see Alistair McGowan's impression of you?
*Yeah and it’s shit. He does an impression of me when I’m doing a self parody of my ‘presenterman’ mode
Whats the essence of 'keeping it real'?
*Never loosing your ‘bits’ staying in touch with the people who knew you ‘before’. Laughing at yourself.
Which friend would you ring if you were stuck on a question for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
*My producer Ed Forsdick
Would you encourage your child(ren) into the same profession as yourself?
*No I’ll try and get them into pro-sports or building and if it’s a boy boxing or ironmongery.
What would you like to invent that would make your life easier?
*A Star Trek transporter - I spend so much time in traffic the ability to ‘beam’ around London would give me more free time.
from The Boy With the Arab Strap The questions I'd like answered, if possible,
Could you please definitively (if you know) when you will leave the BB? I understand lots of factors come into this, just that if you do know, it'd be nice to know one way or the other. It was quite annoying, but I know not deliberate, when Liza cut you off on the Tarbuck interview when you were getting around to this. (PS: that was a great interview, particularly the conversation about the two things he learned there. Pity it couldn't have run longer.)
*Depends on my wife. But at the moment the end of 2000 when my contract runs out.
are there any plans for Here's Johnny to return? I know you've got a lot on your plate, but even repeats of this underrated show would be welcome. Maybe even introduce Lurkers into the BB? All my opinions I know.
*Really glad you remember it. It should’ve been the show I do after the BB because I think at the time it was viewed as not so much ‘Here’s Johnny’ as ‘There’s Who?’
do you keep in touch with anyone you made friends with inside? A strange question I know, but I'm curious about a lot of things.
*Yes I do.
from Wade
When can we expect to see your sitcom? (BBC2's 'Orrible.)
*Filming pilot in August then, if it’s good, 5 next year.
Off camera, does Liza get really seriously annoyed with you, after you sometimes won't let her get a word in in interviews etc.?
*No never. All right then sometimes.
Do you think you'll cry, on your last day at the breakie?
(Cos, y'know, those compilation tapes of past moments can be really sad when they are accomponied with a good song selection)
*Might well do. I want to make my last show a live one though - whenever it is.
I ( me and Cam ) think it would be great if there was a behind the scenes at the breakie, show us what goes on between 3-7AM. It could make for an interesting feature.
*Frightened it might shatter whatever illusions anyone still has about the show. Like a magician showing you how all the tricks are done before the show.
And Johnny, just in case Liza doesn't know....tell her "she's the best (next to you of course) and tell her to never change because she's absolutely lovely!". All the best for everything you do after the breakie Johnny! Bye, Love the show
*Thanks.
from JW Will you take some time off when your child is born?
*Yes.
How has your Catholicism affected your life?
*It means I have a religion.
What do you think when you read some of the obnoxious, insulting messages about your co-hosts that are posted here?
*As I have said before - messages posted here leave anyone who reads them conceited or depressed. If someone has ever written hurtful personally upsetting graffiti about you on a toilet wall at school or on a notice board it’s a rough parallel.
What will you miss most about the Big Breakfast when you finally leave, and what will you be most glad to put behind you?
*I’ll miss the crew, the daily challenge of it, the ‘unknown’ element, the laughs, the cock-ups, the thinking on feet, guests……
If a webcam could be put somewhere in the BB house, what's the best place for it?
*Sturdy Girl's chin - pointing down.
