Opening and Welcome

Fourteen in attendance this evening, including three guests, one in person and two via Zoom.  One person rejoined the Club.  Announcements

Watch for Quandrantid meteor shower outward from, and below, the Big Dipper

Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn lining up this month

He showed a number of images of Jupiter’s north pole cyclone taken by the Juno spacecraft; auroras on Jupiter; a black hole in Sagittarius; and various supernovae.  He discussed a gigantic solar jet that caused our solar system’s heliopause to dip in and out.

Launch - November 16

Re-entry - December 11 11:40am

Watch for comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) at night and comet 96P/Machholz at dawn on January 31, weather permitting

•    Update on April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse from Ron in Texas:  Enchanted Rock (on the centerline) is close to where he lives.  As of now, Texas Parks and Wildlife doesn’t have anything planned for the eclipse at Enchanted Rock.

•    We discussed doing something as a Club for the April 8, 2024 eclipse.  There was not general interest in doing something as a Club; people can do something on their own if they would like.

Business

•    Minutes of previous meeting are posted online by Denise Gregg - Approved

•    Treasurer’s Report - Evan Zorn

•    Ending balance November 30, 2022:  $11314.01

•    Received $100.00 in dues for 2023

•    Ending balance December 31, 2022:  $11414.01

•     Dues for 2023 are due now if you have not yet paid

•    Committee Reports

•    Astronomical League news and activities - Denise Gregg

•    MSRAL - Tulsa June 9-11, 2023

•    Volunteers?

•    Meetings with MSRAL for bylaws.  Craig and Denise attended meetings this past fall.

•    Email will be sent for member comments and approval

•    Youth club (BYA) news - Rick Bryant—Rick was not in attendance this evening.

•    Library Display

•    May 2023

•    FCC - Evan Zorn

•    Should we find alternate storage?

•    May be able to rent a room from the city

•    What to do with old telescopes?  If you would like one, speak up now.  Otherwise we will donate most of them to the Oklahoma City club.

•    It is not clear if the Club voted to donate excess Club equipment that no one in the Club wants to the Oklahoma City club.  We may need to vote on this at the next meeting.

It is not clear if we voted to spend up to $600.00/year for Club storage.  We may need to vote on this at the next meeting.

New Business

•    Club telescopes

•    It is not clear if the Club voted to get another telescope for the library.  We may need to do this at the next meeting.

•    TASM Planetarium?

Tonight’s Program

•    A Year’s Worth of Meteor Showers – Denise

•    She presented on major meteor showers during the year as well as some more-minor ones that have been seen at Club events.  She also discussed the science behind meteor showers; colors of meteors; how meteor showers have been viewed through history; and some meteorite events.
