June 2019 Library Craft Event

Craft Event for Youth: Comet Necklaces and Solar System Hats

For “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program at the Library

What: Craft event for pre-school and grade-school youth at the library, part of the library’s “A Universe of Stories” summer reading program, to make comet necklaces and solar system hats

Who: Local youth plus BAS/BYA members

Where: 2nd floor meeting room of library

When: June 4, 2019 1-2 pm

Who coordinated: Laura Pryce, BPL children's librarian, contacted BAS to ask for volunteers to help with an event centered around the library's summer reading program, since this year's program had a space theme. Abby and Lashawn volunteered to help.

Publicity used: We discussed the event at the May and June BAS meetings. Lashawn sent an email to Club members the week prior to the event, soliciting volunteers. The library advertised it in their “Universe of Stories” announcements, including Facebook. Derek advertised it on our Facebook and Twitter pages as well.

Number of people who attended: We estimated that about 175 youth attended! Abby and Lashawn were assisted by three other BAS members.

Materials brought: Materials needed to assemble the comet necklaces and solar system hats, as well as a fact sheet about the comet necklaces, NASA six-inch rulers, NASA bookmarks and NASA Space Place stickers to give to the youth

Materials of location site used: Containers of crayons, markers and glue sticks

BAS expenditures: Materials for making the necklaces and hats

Comments: A huge turnout—the library was very surprised and pleased with how many came!
