1. Lack of sentence and syntax logic
a. The first half of the sentence doesn’t follow from the second.
b. The course of the sentence is lost entirely after the first clause.
2. Lack of proper paragraph divisions and strong topic sentences
a. Strong topic sentences should begin each paragraph, setting out what will be discussed in the paragraph.
b. Each page of an essay should have around 3-4 paragraphs.
3. Familiar or colloquial speech and clichés
a. Write for a stranger you are trying to impress.
b. Never use the 2nd person (you) or the 1st person singular (I), and use the 1st person plural (we) only if you must.
c. Clichés are lazy and trite ways of expressing yourself.
d. Please don’t provide a narrative of your visit to the museum: “As I walked through the museum…” or “I found three fascinating works at the gallery…”
4. Lack of structure or logic in your argument or discussion
a. The comments about works are vomited forth onto the page with no order.
b. Topic sentences do not reflect the content of the paragraph.
c. Some sentences do not belong with the others in paragraphs.
5. Lack of cohesion in your essay
a. The argument or focus of discussion is confused or not laid out clearly.
b. The argument or discussion does not follow a logical course of claim > evidence
c. There are no transitions between paragraphs
d. The paragraphs in the essay don’t fit together.
The most frequently occurring mistakes have been placed in bold.
The easiest way to catch these problems is to read your paper aloud after finishing it.
